Firstly, the delivery of the presentation. As compared to my
group mates, I think I am not doing as well as them. This is because during the
presentation, I felt a bit nervous and my delivery was not fluent. I will tend
to stutter when I feel nervous. I may know my parts well, but when I stutter,
it gives the audience a feeling that I am not prepared.
Secondly, eye contact with the audience. After looking
through the oral presentation feedback given by my classmates, some of them say
I do not have much eye contact with the audience. I do agree with them that
sometimes during my presentation, I will tend to lose eye contact by looking at
the ground because I am thinking about what to say next. I know that having eye
contact with the audience is very important because this will allow me to build
rapport and make connections. Without any eye contact, the audience can lose
interest in my presentation.
In conclusion, the above-mentioned points are two critical
points that I should work on. Having a good presentation and wow the audience
do not just come suddenly, it will take time to practice and perfect it. The
oral presentation of this group project provides a good platform for me to understand
my weakness and work on it to perfect it.
Even though presentation can be a little
daunting for me, as I am not so good with public speaking, but with more
practices and being more confident, I am sure that I can do well in it.
Dear Hong Yu,
ReplyDeleteI noticed that you did stutter during the presentation as what you mentioned in this reflection. However, don't be discouraged by your own performance! You're definitely correct when you feel that it takes more practices to be good at public speaking. But to actually master it, more experiences are required and I believe everyone in class still has a long way to go to master it. But don't always think about mastering something that you consider yourself to be weak at. This goal can be a bit too far from reach and unrealistic. Instead, you may consider taking things step by step. Since now you've already identified your own weaknesses, you can think about how to improve on them. Always take little improvements as you go along. Having goals that are too far from reach may result in you not being able to learn as much from every experience you have, and you may give up trying because your goal is impossible to attain. But generally speaking, I believe with more rehearsals before the actual presentation your speech will be more fluent as there will be lesser 'think on the spot' moments that you're going to rely on.
Overall, let's all work hard to achieve the areas that we are each weak on and I wish the best in you as you progress on your studies in SIT!
Best regards,
Jun Peng
Hi Jun Peng,
DeleteSorry for the late reply. Thank you for taking your time out to give my post some comments. I will take your advice and hopefully I can work towards my goal. In the meanwhile, good luck for your upcoming exams and work hard too!

This is a well focused, open and self critical reflection. As you state, practice is one of the key factors in improving one's presentations skills, but it is also exercises such as this, where you do, get feedback and then reflect. I really appreciate your effort here, Hong Yu. I'm certain that the experiences in the module will help you in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi Prof Brad,
DeleteThank you. As what Jun Peng has commented: "Always take little improvements as you go along". I hope to take small steps and I believe that I will slowly progress in my communication skill as I continue on with this goal.

Hong Yu
